Silver Fields Resources’ 100% owned 2,682 Hectare Keremeos Silver property is centered within the Northern portion of the Cordillera, adjoining the Silver Bell and Horn Silver crown-granted mining claims which contain the historic Horn Silver Mine.
Silver has been mined within the region as early as the 1890s. It was 1915 when the best of these claims were consolidated into the Horn Silver Group. The claims cover an area which hosts known mineral showings, both on surface and within the deepest workings and main haulage level (1,700 ft level) of the former Dankoe-Utica Silver Mine, which produced and milled ore from 1915 through to 1984.
According to the B.C. Government Minfiles, the former mine produced 433,396 tonnes of ore from which approximately 127 million grams (4,089,409 oz) of silver, 333 thousand grams (10,706 oz) of gold, plus copper, lead and zinc were extracted. The bulk of the production occurred on mineral claims currently held by Silver Fields.
The mine is located atop a hill overlooking the former mill, offices, and the Similkameen River, bordering the Crowsnest Highway and equidistant between Keremeos and Osoyoos. The mine typifies a 'bonanzatype' ore occurrence of high grade mineralization. The high grade ore is a product of secondary enrichment and is almost like Demerara sugar in texture.
When Dankoe (then Utica) took over the mine in 1967, it built the mill with a capacity of 450 tons/day and operated at 300 tons/day until March 1970 when it closed due to dropping Silver prices. Production resumed in March 1974 at 125-175 tons/day and produced over 210,037 ounces of Silver over the next two years. The mine operated until 1984 when it was forced to close operations as the price of Silver fell below $5.00 per ounce.
